Upscale a print file you made

Enlarge your own art with a conservative tool, then inspect the line at full size.

Print shops ask for more pixels than a screen file has. An upscaler can bridge a modest gap. It cannot invent a drawing that was never sharp.

Tools

  • Upscayl

A free desktop upscaler that runs on your machine.

  • Topaz Labs

Desktop and web upscalers aimed at enlargement and sharpening. Check which product is current.

  • Adobe Photoshop

Camera Raw's Super Resolution is one enlarge command inside Photoshop.

How to do it

  1. 1

    Confirm you need it

Check the shop's current file guide for size and resolution. If the scan is already large enough, do not upscale. Scaling a file that is already big only makes a heavier file.

  2. 2

    Start local

Run Upscayl on a copy. If you use Topaz or Photoshop Super Resolution, do that on a copy too. Keep the unscaled original.

  3. 3

    Look at crossings and type

Zoom to 100 percent on line crossings, eyes, and any letters. Halos, doubled edges, and melted corners mean the scale is too aggressive or the wrong model.

  4. 4

    Name the derivative

Save it as a print file with the size in the name. Do not overwrite the drawing.
