Lay flat color under the line you drew

Fill shapes you closed, on a layer beneath the ink. A colorize mask is only a first pass.

Flats are a craft decision: which shapes share a color, where the gap in the line is on purpose. Software fills faster. It should not choose the picture.

  • Clip Studio Paint

Fill tools and refer-to-other-layers so flats stay under your ink.

  • Krita

Colorize Mask can rough in flats from scribbles. You still choose the colors.

  • Procreate

ColorDrop and reference layers for filling by hand on iPad.

How to do it

  1. 1

    Put the line on top

Set the ink layer to multiply, or use the transparent-line file from the scan workflow. Lock it.

  2. 2

Close gaps you mean to close

In Clip Studio, set the fill to refer to the line layer and use a small gap setting. In Procreate, use ColorDrop on a layer below. Paint across gaps you want to stay open.

  3. 3

    Optional rough pass

In Krita, a Colorize Mask can spread color from a few scribbles. Treat the result as a stain. Paint the edges yourself before you call it flats.

  4. 4

    Name the layers

Skin, cloth, background. Future you, and anyone who inherits the file, should see the decisions.
